There are many different options for food and groceries around, which can be done either by car or with the electric bikes available in the house.
Bakeries
- Maison Mamy bakery – For us the best bread around, especially on WE when they make a special baguette only available these two days. Open Wednesday to Sunday noon.
- Le Fournil du Talemelier – An alternative to Maison Mamy, plus you get to stroll into the medieval part of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne.

You can also find very decent bread at the supermarkets (they have their own baking facilities), the earlier the better, especially for Intermarché.
Fruits & veggies
Nothing beats the farmer’s market, and there are two of them around.
- Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne market – Every Wednesday morning, under the Plane trees (7 mn away by car). A few stands with veggies & fruits, some grown nearby, meaning only seasonal. A cheese monger and a fishmonger, both quite good if you ask us.
- Bretenoux market – Every Saturday morning. This one is a bit farther away (12 mn by car), but you get to see the beautiful Place des Consuls where it stands. Also it is has a larger choice than the one in Beaulieu.

For other days of the week, the two large supermarkets have it all, and to some extend are committed to local and seasonal products. However, there is this better alternative. What it lacks in vernacular looks, it has in amazing quality and broad choice.
- Prim’frais grocery and produce – (not well located on Google map, just next to Eric Glenet Butcher) Great selection of fruit & veggies, fresh eggs, cheese monger, tea and coffee, plus a selection of well curated groceries, wine and spirits. Basically one can do most of the shopping between here and next door butcher, but for the bread.
- Eric Glemet butcher – A meat amateur’s paradise, but not only. Many cooked meals (the Friday brandade is quite nice) and deserts (A tiramisu to die for).

Two nearby supermarkets
- Intermarché – Just down the road at the entrance of Altillac. A very decent selection of everything, including meat. Less appealing fishmonger. 5mn away by car, hardly more by electric bike, at least on the way down.
- Centre Leclerc – Upsized vs. Intermarché, à bit further away (8 mn), everything including a good seafood selection.

Wine a spirit
While both local supermarket will provide a decent selection or everything, you might want to explore further, or seek out useful advices, and benefit from a more curated choice:
- Le Chai de Bretenoux – A small-but-nice selection of wines and spirit. Quantin (owner) is passionate about his selection, make him talk till he finds that special wine you didn’t know you liked (or liked to discover).
- Lucille Flaconneuse – Located in the beautiful medieval center of Beaulieu sur Dordogne, a great selection, with a special mention for out-of-the-ordinary Champagnes.
Also there is the local production from nearby Coteaux de Glanes. It all depends on personal taste of course, so here goes: while we think the “standard “Tradiution” red is a little harsh, the white is pretty nice and also the “Les Fondateurs” and “quatre saisons” red. We are not rosé amateurs, but we’re told the Glanes rosé has its merits. Last, it’s always nicer to purchase on the production spot 🙂
- Coteaux de Glanes – Maison Lapauze – There are half a dozen producers around Glanes, we have our habits with Elodie and Gilbert. Better to call beforehand (00 33 6 75 44 92 22 or 00 33 6 33 63 70 41), but usually open for business.
